This Ain’t Elaine’s “Big Salad”: Meet The “Huge Fatty Salad” Food Trend

If you recall the old “Seinfeld” television show, then, you probably remember Elaine and the “Big Salad” she liked to order. Well, there’s a new Big Salad in town, and this one does more than flatten your tummy.

Meet the new and improved “Huge Fatty Salad.”

That’s right; the food trend is pointing to big salads filled with healthy fats like extra-virgin olive oil to boost brain function, according to an item in the Huffington Post.

The oil has to be extra-virgin olive because it appears to contain a key anti-inflammatory compound called “oleocanthal.” This brain-friendly element helps to keep the brain working properly.

According to the research, regular olive oil has trans-fats which are not doing anyone any favors. Other bad fatty oils to steer clear of in salads include canola, corn, soybean, vegetable, peanut, safflower and others.

The Huge Fatty Salad should be eaten once daily, says the author of a new book called “Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life.” Max Lugavere says you can be creative about what comprises the salad, but the dressing must contain the extra-virgin olive oil.

Some delicious concoctions might feature wild salmon or grass-fed beef on top of some yummy and super healthy greens. Iceberg is not allowed in the Huge Fatty Salad because it contains little of important nutrients. Lugavere suggests spinach, kale and arugula instead.

Avocado, beets, broccoli, chia seeds, balsamic vinegar, grilled chicken, raw garlic, bell peppers or grilled shrimp are all wonderful companions to meld in a Huge Fatty Salad.

Put them all in a big bowl, and let your creativity be your guide.
