Susan McGalla Helps Lead Corporate Gender Diversity Through Example

Companies that consistently outperform are ethnically diverse and gender-diverse. According to statistics, businesses are 15% more likely to outperform if they are gender diverse. Companies that are ethnically diverse are more likely to outperform by 35%. Diversity supports the embrace of new ideas, offering numerous ways to look at the same situation or problem. Despite the statistics, S&P 500 companies do not have a large percentage of women in the C-level work force.

Susan McGalla has stepped in on this issue in order to lead other women leaders in the corporate world. She credits her abilities from working with men and women. She started her career at American Outfitters when all company executives were male. Prior to her exit from the retail chain she was the president. McGalla went on to found P3 Executive Consulting. She now holds the position of Vice President of Business Strategy and Creative Development for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers. The NFL is greatly dominated by male influence but McGalla is no stranger to this environment.

Though McGallas has made significant progress in her career, more women are in need of opportunities. Despite the numerous initiatives and women’s networks, there is still a problem underlying, perpetuating the issue. Only 25% of senior roles across the globe are filled by women.

To fix the problem, sponsorship opportunities can provide a solution. Ideally, a sponsor advocates for women in the workplace by recommended more women to take the helm on projects and lead important assignments. The sponsor is meant to help women have greater upward mobility in organizations, much like McGallas.

Susan McGallas is also the former CEO of Wet Seal, Inc. Currently, she serves on the boards of the Magee-Womens Hospital Research Institute and Foundation and HFF Inc. McGallas also serves as director of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. She continues to provide her expertise through marketing, branding, and talent management consultations. Her upbringing with two older brothers and football coach as a father helped her to not see her gender as a hindrance.
