Their biggest worry was if they could find such a place within the downtown area. After six years since they began thinking of having a fun and easy place to eat in M Street, the dream finally came true.
Today, M Street has become home to a 21-store farm-to-table chain of restaurants popularly known as Sweetgreen. Ru is happy to have made his dream come true. Coincidently, the landlord of the tavern where Sweetgreen is based in M Street used to be the same landlord of the room where Nathaniel Ru lived while in college. A Journey Full Of Struggles
When Ru first approached the landlord with an idea of opening the tavern, she hung up his phone. Ru’s friends continued to call her daily for a month before she finally agreed to meet and talk about it. Nathaniel remembers this day as the last day that he wore a suit to a business meeting.
On meeting the landlord, Ru and his friends were surprised to find that the landlord had noticed something fruitful in them. She told them to go and design the business plan well and meet again when they have a solid document. The three college finalists took three and half weeks to find backers and architect. To their surprise, their landlord was ready to help them, even without any knowledge of restaurant management.
Today, Sweetgreen has several stores in the Northeast’s cities and their suburbs including New York, Washington, Philadelphia, and Boston. The restaurant markets itself not just as a place to buy food but as a place with a deep purpose.
According to Theresa Dold, a senior student who is also the head of digital marketing stated that people don’t just buy what you sell but the way you do it. On his side, Nathaniel Ru believes that the restaurant has been more than a food parlor but also a lifestyle brand, which holds yoga classes as well as promoting gym and fitness clubs.
