In 2013, the city of Iloilo was hit by the typhoon Haiyan and thousands of homes were destroyed. Financier and philanthropist Greg Secker stepped in to help. His foundation, the Greg Secker Foundation, plans to build 100 permanent homes for those affected by the typhoon. The project, aptly named “Build a House, Build a Home”, wants to go further than just providing permanent homes. It hopes to provide career skills-based education, too.
Greg Secker initiates social projects worldwide and then widens his circle of collaborators. In the case of Iloilo, he teamed up with former world boxing champion Nonito Donaire, Jr., who helped with finances. Another Filipina and friend, Rosario Sanico, donated the land. The site, called the Greg Secker Foundation Village, is helping to rebuild after the devastating damage caused by typhoon Haiyan. Besides 6,183 deaths, the typhoon displaced 4 million people.
Social initiatives on such a grand scale have earned Secker recognitions. He is now a member of the board of the City Philanthropy Ambassador’s Group. In 2017, Secker also made the “200 Most Influential Philanthropists and Social Entrepreneurs” list.
Greg Secker is eager to help communities with his vast fortune. But he wants to empower rather than just hand out. “The golden thread that runs through everything I do is empowerment through education,” he says. Secker urges his staff to help out, as well. He flies them economy class so they can contribute hands-on to his social projects.
Greg Secker grew up in Norfolk, England. After studying Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Nottingham, he shifted to business. He started at Thomas Cook Financial Services in the mid-1990s. In 2000, by the age of 25, he had become Vice President at Mellon Financial Corporation, and in 2003, he retired from the company, becoming a full-time forex trader. Finally, in 2010, he started the Greg Secker Foundation.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, trader, and philanthropist, Secker has also authored two books: “Financial Freedom Through Forex” and “Trading Your Way to Success”.
