Amazon is launching itself headfirst into the realm of meal kits. Following on the heels of Blue Apron, Amazon has begun offering ingredients packaged together for customers to cook into fresh meals at home. The meal kits are currently available to Amazon’s Prime Fresh users.
There are a variety of meal options currently available. They include Steak Au Poivre, Wagyu Beef Burger with Bacon Jam and Sweet Potato Fries, Veggie Burger with Harissa Aioli and Smoked Eggplant, Tacos al Pastor with Pork, and Roast Chicken with Tarragon-Mushroom Sauce.
The new meal kits do not come cheap. The lowest price is $14.99 for the vegetarian option, while others cost as much as $18.99. Each of the meals is intended to serve two people. The meal kits include the ingredients necessary for the meal, already chopped or sliced to the appropriate portions. There is also a recipe included that is designed by chefs and is easy to follow. The boxes that the meal kits are packaged in are purported to be environmentally friendly. Their pricing is in line with other meal kits sold by Blue Apron and HelloFresh.
Delivery of the meal kits involves a monthly $14.99 fee as part of the Amazon Fresh grocery delivery program. Customers can avoid that fee by choosing to pick up their groceries themselves at one of Amazon’s new Fresh Pickup locations.
This is not the first time that Amazon has shown an interest in food-related endeavors. Amazon recently bid to acquire Whole Foods, and is also planning other food services. That includes a lunch delivery service, a restaurant delivery service, and a new grocery store concept that involves no cashiers and no waiting in lines to check out.
